Decorating a Cookie Without Icing

It's been a while huh? I decided since it's been so long since we have talked, I would share something super easy. You know, kind of like a peace offering.

Remember last year when I let you in on a little secret? I thought it was time that I showed you another way I like decorating cookies without icing. Gasp!! I know.........no icing. Let us face the facts, it's way less calories right? Well if not, please let's just pretend.

Here are a few bonuses for decorating a cookie without icing:

  • less sugar = less calories (please don't burst my bubble)
  • super fast, like speedy fast
  • no 24 hour dry time before packaging

Now I am not one to play favorites with my cookies. I don't want to hurt their feelings. I LOVE decorating with icing. But I also LOVE decorating without. And give me a cookie? Yep, I'll eat it.

Let me show you how you can decorate a cookie without icing.

How to Decorate a Cookie Without Icing

The first thing you will want to do is color your cookie dough and bake those cookies. I created a great tutorial on coloring your dough. Or you can watch the video below. Hurry and go take a look.

I used Americolor Gel in Forest Green for the cookies pictured.

The only supplies you will need are:

  • baked and cooled cookie of your color preference
  • corn syrup
  • sanding sugar of your choice
  • brush used for food only

Brush (paint) a very light coat of corn syrup. I chose to only do the top portion of the pot of gold.

Using sanding sugar, sprinkle or pour the sugar directly over the cookie area where you brushed on the corn syrup. **Tip - Use a bowl underneath your cookie to catch the sanding sugar. This prevents the sugar from getting everywhere!

That's it!!! I know!!! Super quick and easy right? The corn syrup will dry. Actually it dries pretty quick when you are only using a thin coat. Give it an hour or less. The corn syrup on this cookie was dry to the touch in 15 minutes! Yes, I timed it.

Now comes a moment of clarity. After I was done with the above cookie, I thought "hey, lets airbrush the bottom". You do this to correct? Always thinking of something else you could of done, when you are finished.

Normally I would have airbrushed first, THEN added the corn syrup and sanding sugar. But guess what? It really didn't matter.

I used my Stencil Genie and a stencil I purchased from The Cookie Countess. I also used some new airbrush coloring called Dinky Doodle in White Matt, which you can purchase at The Cookie Countess. If you have never tried Dinky Doodle, you really need to. I seriously love this stuff. It dries the minute it hits the cookie!! If you do not have an airbrush, no worries. You can purchase Wilton's Color Mist. You should get the same results.

I really love the way this turned out!
