Sugar Cookies

This is my favorite sugar cookie recipe. I use it for almost all of my cookies. I adapted the original version, which you can find at LilaLoa, slightly to meet my own taste buds needs.

1 cup unsalted butter (or two sticks) room temperature or cold
1 ½ cup sugar
2 eggs
1tsp vanilla extract or emulsion
1 tsp almond extract or emulsion
¾ tsp salt
¾ tsp baking powder
1 ½ tsp cardamom
4 ½ cups flour

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add eggs, vanilla and almond extract or emulsion. Mix until combined.

In a separate bowl, add flour, salt, baking powder and cardamom. Whisk to combine the dry ingredients.

Slowly add dry ingredients to the butter and sugar mixture and mix on low until all ingredients are combined.

Divide dough in half and roll between two pieces of wax paper at 3/4" thick. Rolling between the wax paper prevents adding any more flour to your dough. Cut out shapes and bake.

Bake at 375 for 7-8 minutes.

Let cookies cool completely before decorating.


* You can use room temperature or cold butter. If your butter is cold, cut it up into cubes and place into your mixer bowl. By the time you have all of your ingredients ready, the butter should be ready to go.
